I've heard that people can have their own personal website, how do you get one? or is it something you have to pay for? what service do you use for your websites, if you have one. I would appreciate the help

SD, there are ways to get your own website, but they are usually pretty technial. Most of us website operators have domain names. I, for example, have a domain name (how other people find a website on the Internet) through a service called DynDNS. This is a free service. As for the content of the site, it must be written in HTML or XHTML (basically the same thing except that XHTML has some more restrictions). Also, to host your site, you will need a Web server, such as Apache 2.2.8 (available from the Apache Software Foundation's site, www.apache.org).

blahhh, then what about those free web hosting sites, like freewebs? I've tried them, but it was a bit too annoying, do you know anything simular to that?

I've been told to use Geocities. Anyone know anything aout this? I have no problems with writing simple HTML documents, but I would like to try and see if I actualy get a site, if it'll work. I don't have enough cash to buy a server to host my own site. Freewebs, is a bit crazy to navigate around, same with 50webs. Does anyone have any experiences with goecities, as in ease of use, and what u have to do? I already have a yahoo account to use if its needed.

I've tried free webs but I didn't think it was very accessible. I don't know any html code, so try to write th webpages in microsoft front page when I'm using the college computers, but I can't get that any more because apparently they don't sell or make it for microsoft office 2007.

It's just better to go with a host that you pay for, it's more reliable for when servers go down and such. HTML isn't really hard, just takes a bit to get use to. I use to have my own website as well. Got someone one to set up an an Apatchi server and you just upload the files to an FTP.

just to clarify, a x.dyndns.org is technically a subdomain, you usually can't get domain names that you have all dns rightss to for free.

sigh, oh well, darn, but that does lead me to an HTML question. if I had a five chapter story and wanted to do something like this

my story is blablabla

hen chapter one
chapter two
chapter three

the chapters are linked to pages, but I don't know how to do that. if that makes anysense.

You can get a 50webs account however there will be a captcha, or you could get a googlepage. Any other services are either pay, or they give you ads. I personally chose the 50sebs approach, however if you'd like a domain for yourself like www.mysite.com then you will pay about $5 a month, or if you are looking for a price to pay a small fee once a year, let me know. I am looking for the same thing.

I don't mind ads, I just don't have no where enough cash to buy a server to host on.

To post 8, if I understand right, this is a table of contents type thing and you want to make links to chapters on separate pages? <pre> Here's an example of a link. By protocal I mean file, callto, mailto, skype, http, ftp, any others you can think of. If you want a same page link, you will need to create tags at the beginning of chapters, like at the start of chapter one, put <#chap1> then on your link, put Chapter one. </pre> HtH! The pre thing is to keep code from being processed, you don't need it in your links.

Post 12 by chikorita (move over school!) on Saturday, 10-May-2008 21:38:33

ah crap! That didn't go right. Your same page link should look like this: <pre> Chapter one. </pre> Sorry, don't know what went wrong there.

Post 13 by chikorita (move over school!) on Saturday, 10-May-2008 21:39:46

What the heck? Someone please help, I can't get the link to show up, even with the pre tag!

Post 14 by The Elemental Dragon (queen of dragons) on Sunday, 11-May-2008 21:27:35

maybe just to put the code in with spaces so the exact code will show up.

What I'm going for is:

example:

my story

chapter one: links to the page with chapter one on it
chapter two: links to the page with chapter two on it
etc.

but the chapter links would be on a main page and the main page shows up in the tool bar, the others don't, just I need to have the chapter links go to that page.

grr, I'm not explaining that well.

but I hope it semi-makes sense.

I have a website on freewebs.com, It isn't much right now, but I should get some more done on it later today. once I figure out how to embed a video from another site, music video that is, onto the homepage of each of my favorite current works to discribe the characters

or maybe on just one video on the homepage.

Excelent. I'll have to give freewebs a second try. Did they take down the captcha?
